About the Poem

I wrote this poem as a sort of follow up to my poem "First Times." Again, the inspiration was my daughter and her attending college.

If this brings a tear to your eye, don't be ashamed. It has been 13 years since I wrote this and my "little girl" now has two little ones of her own. But I cried typing this in.

Where Did My Baby Go?

Where did my baby go?
It seems like only yesterday
You cooed and played in your crib.
I'm sure it was just last week
I stayed up all night with you
When you had colic.
How could it be seventeen years
Since you tottered across the room
With your first steps?

Instead of a small voice asking,
"Mom, where are you?"
There is only the sound of memories.
No young voice says,
"I'm glad you're home! Guess what happened at school today?".
Now when I come in the door,
No TV is blasting away
(until I turn it on to drown the silence).

There's no more letting dishes go dirty to play "Barbie's".
They are packed away,
Awaiting a new owner to say "Can we have a doll party today?"
No more leaving beds unmade to play childish games.
My beds and dishes now get done with (out) little interference.

Where did my baby go?
While I wasn't looking
She grew into a beautiful young woman.
Her hair in curls instead of "Buffy" tails.
Trendy clothes and shoes and boots
Have replaced t-shirts, torn jeans and dirty sneaks.
Dolls and pets have been replaced
By real live friends, teddy bears and romance books by boys.

Where did my baby go?
Nowhere, she's in my heart
And right beside her is
The lovely young woman she's become.

Thats how my mom feels about me last year I entered my teen rebellious years. I honestly wanted nothing to do with my parents. My mom looks at me and wonders 'what happened to that little girl who would never leave my side?' I love my mom more than anything. I will always be her little girl.

I love the poem. I think any mother would. This is probably how all mothers feel, but some of us cannot express it so creatively.

Only parents can realize such feelings - if only children knew before they left home how We miss their presense so much in spite of all the trials and tribulations!

THIS POEM REMINDED ME OF ME AND MY DAUGHTER WHO IS MY ONLY CHILD. SHE HAS BEEN MY EVERYTHING IN LIFE AND NOW SHE IS NOT WITH ME. HER LIFE IS A MESS AND I WANT HER TO COME HOME SO MUCH, BUT SHE WON'T. SHE IS GOING TO HAVE A BABY IN MARCH.
