About the Poem

I wrote this poem for my little niece, who never got to see her grandpa. He was killed in the line of duty six months before she was born. Now at the tender age of 4, she's starting to wonder and ask questions. This poem is in loving memory of Lt. Michael J. Lutz, who was taken from us, July 12th, 1994. Muskingum County Sherrifs Department, Zanesville, Ohio. Abby, this is for you.

For Abby

My darling little niece, you're growing up so fast .
You're starting to ask questions, especially about the past.
Your grandpa was taken from you before you were ever born.
His life was taken suddenly, and it has left his loved ones torn.

At 4 years old you're very bright and your innocence looks into your mommy's eyes,
asking that question she's not sure how to answer, "How did Pap-paw die?"
Little one, he's up in heaven, where all the angels fly.
High above he watches you with tears filled in his eyes.

They are not of sadness, but of joy - he's so very proud of you,
you are his little angel, and forever he will be watching over you.

I really enjoyed reading this poem and in a way it related to me. My name is also Abby and I lost a special person to me a few months ago. My Grandfather. In class we had to pick a poem to read and I picked this poem. that is how much i really like it! Great Job

I really like this poem. It touched my heart. I started to cry because it made me think of my niece and her great-grandfather died 2 years before she was born. She hasn't started asking questions yet because she is only 16 months old. But when she does my big sister will know what to do.
