About the Poem
This poem was written just days after the tragic shooting at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado. The callousness of the press angered me! I felt as though a part of me died that day and sobbing, I wrote this poem.
A Child Died Today |
by Poet deVine |
A child died today and the whole world came to see tuning in from coast to coast glued to their TV. Microphones and cameras shoving in for the best bite. And I, standing on the outside, felt it wasn’t right. Dignity is what was missing as the media scrambled around. Compassion never had a chance upon that killing ground. A child died today and madness reigned free. How do I know you ask? You see, that child was me. |

I found this poem rather extensive and thoughtful. I felt certain emotions that this person was having. It seems to me that this poem may have several meanings to it, but what I felt the most is that their childhood was gone and it was a very tragic event for this person. Maybe their childhood was ripped away from them, maybe by becoming a teen parent, or having to deal with certain family ordeals that may have led to becoming an adult role model and setting an appropiate environment for younger siblings. I liked this poem very much.
Laura

My son, daughter-in-law and grand-daughter live in Littleton, and I felt exactly as the poet felt. Total frustration at the news media for being so crass about the death of our children. But for the grace of God my very own grandchild could have been one of those children.
Sabina
