About the Poem

After I broke up with my boyfriend, whom I really loved, I asked him if we could ever get back together. He replied, "When pigs fly!" It was a joke, because he always uses that phrase, but he did mean what he said. I could not face being without him, and I wrote this poem to express my sadness and pain and the hope that we would someday get back together.

Pigs on the Wing

After you left me
I wasn't the same.
You were stuck in my mind
Like a terrible stain.
Oh, the rejection!
I couldn't face the shame
Of my once whole heart
Now butchered and slain.
A feeling that I
Could never explain,
I would cry
Whenever I heard your name.
I wanted your soul
To once again claim.
My heart took
A very long time to tame.
I constantly wallowed through
The sorrow and the pain.
Occasionally glancing
Up though the rain.
And watching
For pigs on the wing.
