About the Poem
I am a student at Butler Traditional High School. I wrote this poem after studying and looking at the Vietnam Wall. It made me stop and think that a lot of people have given their lives for my freedom. Even freedom has a price.
Veteran |
by Phillip Burnette |
A veteran is what you are, because you fought under the Stripes and Stars. In World War I and World War II, we sure did lose a lot of you to all the German troops. And for the men and women whose names are on that black marble wall: These are the names that I respect most of all, for you have taken a spot that could have been my dad's. And for this I am truly glad. So I will respect you to my dying day, and make sure your legacy never fades away. For one day I might join you there in heaven, as a United States Marine, proud to call myself a veteran. |
